It's a lovely afternoon, the sun peeking out from behind fluffy gray clouds to cast a warm glow upon you as you drive your Jeep Cherokee down the highway. You are returning from your mother's house, having helped her disassemble, move and reassemble her furniture so the move to her new apartment would go as smoothly as possible. You're in a good mood, rocking out to some mad tunage (Def Lepard's Pour Some Sugar On Me, perhaps, or Journey's Don't Stop Believin') while you drive home.
But then it happens: a loud rattling sound bursts forth from the back of your beloved Jeep, and she starts sputtering along the highway as if to say "owowowowowowowowowowow!" You pull to the side of the highway to survey the damage, socked and disappointed to find your rear differential to be almost completely fried. You call your wife to explain the situation and limp your poor Jeep home, knowing that this problem was probably going to be pretty expensive.
After a consultation with our fabulous mechanic, he explained that fixing the Jeep, our one and only source of independent transportation (our kickass roommate was kind enough to let us carpool with him during our time of need), would cost us just a little over $1000. We unfortunately don't have that kind of scratch laying around (unless clumps of cat hair and dust bunnies suddenly become currency) so we have decided to get creative with making a dent in that repair bill.
